How To Do: A Perfect High Bun

Home / Blog / How To Do: A Perfect High Bun

I have a ton of hair and I used to hate having to get all my hair up into a high bun.

The weight of my hair would always pull my ponytail down or I’d have lumps and flyways coming out in every direction. Through sheer desperation, I came up with this trick to get a perfectly smooth, high bun every time.

Enjoy!

Follow These Easy Steps

Step 1:

Spray you hair with lots of hairspray.

Step 2:

While still damp with hair spray, brush your hair and smooth it back.

Step 3:

Following the line of your cheekbone and brush back the front portion of your hair into a half-up half down look. (This allows you to smooth back the front portion without having to deal with the bottom half at the same time.)

Step 4:

Once you have secured your half up look with a hair tie, brush the bottom portion of your hair upwards and gather all you hair up into a ponytail. Make sure to smooth out lumps with your brush as you go.

Step 5:

Join two hair ties together and use them to tie up your ponytail.

Step 6:

Use a couple of bobby pins to fasten the hair ties. A downward criss-cross pattern will keep your hair ties from slipping and loosening your ponytail.

Step 7:

Spray and smooth our your hair one more time before creating you bun.You can gently use a comb to smooth hair. Follow the direction of your hair, smoothing inwards towards the base of your ponytail.

Step 8:

Split your ponytail into 2-6 sections depending on thickness. For best results make sure each twist is .5-1 inch in diameter. (I like to do consecutively smaller twists for a more tapered look.)

Step 9:

In order to keep your bun centered on the back of your head you will have to alternate which side you pull each twist around. In this video for instance I pull my twists: Right, Left, Right, Left. (Remember that the twisting direction should match the side you are pull the twist around from otherwise the twist will unravel. Right Side: Twist Right & Left Side: Twist Left.

Step 10:

Use bobby pins all around the edge of your bun to fasten each twist to your head. The more the better. Push the bobby pins inwards towards the center of the bun and make sure to each bobby pin has hair from the twist and from the base of your scalp fastened together.

Step 11:

Once all your twists are pinned and fastened tight, do one final hairspray and shake test to make sure your hair and nice and secure.

Step 12:

Add a hair net to hide all those flyaways and you’re good to go!
